Visa Token Account Validation (VTAV) adds an extra validation step during tokenisation to help detect account takeover before authorisation. An additional layer of security that runs seamlessly within the existing token lifecycle.

How VTAV works
VTAV runs during cryptogram generation as part of the network token flow. It can check CVV2, address, and name against issuer records, and prevents authorisation from proceeding if validation fails. This helps catch compromised credentials before they reach the authorisation stage, adding protection without adding friction to the customer experience.

How VTAV works
Account takeover is one of the most difficult fraud types to detect because the attacker is using real credentials. VTAV provides an additional checkpoint at the tokenisation layer, validating account details against the issuer before a transaction is even submitted for authorisation. This makes it harder for compromised cards to be used for fraudulent purchases and helps protect both the business and the cardholder.
VTAV in the token lifecycle
VTAV is triggered automatically during cryptogram generation for Visa network tokens. When a token is used for payment, VTAV validates account details in real time. If validation fails, authorisation is prevented and fraud is stopped at the earliest possible point in the payment journey, before the transaction ever reaches the acquirer.
