What Is SWIFT? Definition and How It Works

Definition

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a member-owned cooperative that operates a secure global messaging network used by over 11,000 financial institutions in 200+ countries to exchange standardised payment instructions and financial messages. SWIFT does not move funds itself; it transmits the instructions that cause funds to move between banks through correspondent banking relationships.

How it works

SWIFT provides a secure, standardised communication network connecting financial institutions globally. Each institution is identified by a BIC (Business Identifier Code), an 8 or 11-character identifier specifying the institution, country, and location.

A SWIFT payment instruction: the originating bank composes a message specifying the beneficiary, amount, currency, and correspondent chain details. The message is transmitted to the next institution in the correspondent chain, which validates the instruction, performs AML and sanctions screening, and either forwards it to the next correspondent or credits the final beneficiary.

SWIFT messages historically used the MT format. The network began migrating to ISO 20022 MX messages for cross-border payments (CBPR+) from March 2023, with a co-existence period running to November 2025. ISO 20022 messages carry richer, structured data enabling better automated processing and compliance screening.

SWIFT GPI, launched in 2017, adds end-to-end tracking, same-day settlement commitments, and fee transparency across the correspondent chain, significantly improving speed and visibility without changing the fundamental infrastructure.

Why it matters

SWIFT is the de facto standard for international bank-to-bank communication. Without SWIFT connectivity, a financial institution cannot send or receive international wire transfers or participate in correspondent banking. SWIFT connectivity is a prerequisite for any bank operating internationally.

For businesses, SWIFT is the infrastructure beneath most cross-border wire transfers. Understanding its role clarifies why international payments are slower and more expensive than domestic ones: each correspondent in the chain introduces latency, fees, and FX conversion.

SWIFT has geopolitical significance: exclusion from SWIFT cuts a financial institution off from international payment flows. SWIFT disconnections have been used as sanctions tools against Iran in 2012 and Russian banks in 2022.

What is a SWIFT code (BIC)?

A BIC is an 8 or 11-character alphanumeric identifier assigned to financial institutions on the SWIFT network. Format: 4-character bank code + 2-character country code + 2-character location code + optional 3-character branch code. SWIFT codes are required when initiating international wire transfers to identify the receiving institution.

Does SWIFT move money?

No. SWIFT is a messaging network, it transmits payment instructions but does not hold or transfer funds. Actual movement of funds is achieved by debiting and crediting correspondent (nostro/vostro) accounts held between institutions. SWIFT provides the communication; the banking system provides the settlement.

What is the difference between SWIFT and SEPA?

SWIFT is a global messaging network for international bank-to-bank communication. SEPA standardises euro-denominated bank transfers across the SEPA zone using its own payment schemes (SEPA Credit Transfer, SEPA Instant) without requiring SWIFT for intra-SEPA payments. SWIFT is used for payments outside the SEPA zone.
