Overview
MCC 6540 covers transactions where prepaid cards are loaded with funds at the point of interaction — typically at retail merchant terminals, kiosks, or other physical locations. This includes initial card activation loads and subsequent reloads.
Transaction Profile
Low to mid value, high frequency, card-present, automated terminal loading, cash and card-funded loads
Card Network Notes
Visa and Mastercard POI funding rules apply. Loading limits, velocity monitoring, and AML requirements are mandated by networks.
Risk & Compliance
Risk is medium. Physical point-of-interaction loading provides better identity verification than remote loading but still requires AML compliance and velocity monitoring. Cash-funded loads at retail locations require additional controls.
